Pet Seizures: What Causes Them and How to React in an Emergency

Witnessing your pet have a seizure can be a terrifying experience. Seizures in pets may stem from various causes, including epilepsy, exposure to toxins, liver or kidney disease, low blood sugar, head trauma, or brain tumors. Some breeds are more genetically predisposed to seizures, and in many cases, the exact cause remains unknown. No matter the cause, it’s important to treat seizures seriously and seek veterinary evaluation to identify any underlying conditions and determine the best course of treatment.

If your pet is having a seizure, stay calm and ensure their safety by moving nearby objects away and keeping them in a quiet space. Do not attempt to restrain them or put anything in their mouth. Most seizures last under two minutes, but if one continues longer or your pet has multiple seizures within 24 hours, it becomes a medical emergency.
